Laser Hair Removal - FAQ's
Frequently Asked Questions about Laser Hair Removal
Q: What is laser hair removal and how does it work?
A. Laser hair removal is a technique that uses beams of highly concentrated light to penetrate the hair follicles. The light is absorbed by pigment in the hair follicles and destroys the hair within the follicle. Laser hair reduction is growing in popularity because it's a safe effective way to remove unwanted body hair. Laser can selectively target dark coarse hair while leaving the surrounding skin undamaged.
Q: Why do most people get laser hair removal instead of waxing or tweezing?
A. It removes unwanted body hair permanently. Shaving, waxing and tweezing is not only ongoing but some people develop irritation, rash, nicks and ingrown hairs as a result.
Q: How do I know if I'm a good candidate for laser hair removal?
A. Because laser targets melanin (color) laser hair removal works best on darker pigmented hair. Red white, gray or blonde hair indicates a lack of melanin therefore is not going to be affected by laser hair removal. At Dermavita we offer complimentary consultations where our highly skilled staff can best evaluate your needs and design a treatment plan to meet your goals while managing expectations.

Q: How many treatments does it generally take?
A. While the number of treatments varies from person to person, we recommend a minimum of 5 treatments on scheduled intervals to see best result. However due to hormonal imbalances or other factors more sessions may be needed to get you optimum results. Laser hair removal works better on some people than others so unfortunately there is no way to guarantee results, but it is worth mentioning that laser technology has come a long way in recent years.
Q: How long does a laser hair removal session take?
A. Depending on the area to be treated as well as the client's comfort level it can take 10 minutes or up to 90 minutes for larger body parts. During your consultation we can answer this question more accurately.
Q: Is there anything that I need to be prepared for before my laser session?
A. Shave the area to be treated the night before or morning of treatment. Avoid the sun, tanning beds, spray tan products or bronzers. We will recommend that you wear an SPF 30 or higher before and after your treatments.
Q: Does laser hair removal hurt?
A. This is probably the most common question asked regarding laser hair removal. Every person is different but the answer is yes, there is a small amount of discomfort. Most people describe the sensation similar to a warm rubber band snap. We can discuss measures to ensure your comfort during your laser hair removal session if needed.
Q: How much does it cost?
A. There are a few variables effecting overall cost, the area to be treated and how many sessions needed to get you the best possible results. At Dermavita we offer individual treatments, packages of 3 and packages of 5. We can go over all your options during your initial consultation.
Q: What do I need to do to be prepared for Laser hair removal?
A. In order to effectively treat the area you'll need to STOP waxing and tweezing a minimum of 6 weeks prior to your first treatment. You can continue to shave the area but if there is no hair in the follicle there is nothing for the laser to target. No recent deliberate sun exposure i.e.: tanning beds, tanning products or laying out with the intention of getting tan. Because tan skin is less predictable and your safety is paramount, if you have had recent sun exposure or used tanning products we'll need to reschedule your appointment. Some medication can be contraindications and we can go over these during your consultation, and at any time during your series please mention any new medications.
Q: Are there any temporary or permanent side effects?
A. Yes, there can be temporary side effects associated with laser hair removal. Some people have more adverse side effects than others. Most common is red, raised and irritated skin in the area treated, similar to a mild sunburn. This can subside within a few hours or more rarely a few days. It's more likely to experience temporary side effects rather than a permanent one.
Skin discoloration can occur for a variety of reasons, laser on tanned skin, hormonal imbalance or over treatment. It's very unlikely but blistering and burns can result from laser. The likelihood and risks of any severe side effect will be addressed during your initial consultation.
Q: What can I expect right after a Laser Vein Treatment?
A. Some clients will experience redness, swelling, and changes to skin pigmentation, which usually passes within a few days. The veins will gradually fade and disappear over the course of several weeks as your body naturally removes the treated cells. You will need to avoid exposing the treated areas to sunlight. Many patients require repeat sessions, spaced roughly 6 weeks apart, to completely resolve the appearance of spider veins.
Q: Is Laser Vein Removal permanent?
A. There no is treatment for veins that can guarantee permanent vein removal. The most realistic description is long-term vein reduction. New spider veins have a tendancy to appear in the same area over and over again. This is due to the fact that our daily activities put stress on certain areas of our body that spider veins usually develop from.
