New research confirms that retinoids are the number one topical skin ingredient to show dramatic results when properly used. Often times it causes irritation; therefore, users give up too soon and never experience the benefits of skin improvement.
Retinols are often misunderstood. Decades of research has shown that retinoids, when properly used, can turn around aging skin, smooth fine lines, fade dark spots, make pores look smaller and help with the treatment of acne.
Retinol - Is the whole vitamin molecule (in active form), often found in skincare products. It can be broken down into thousands of smaller components, including retinoic acid found in prescription medications (also called Tretinoin, the active ingredient in Renova and Retin-A). Retinol (in topical gels and creams) has been found to be beneficial in the management of acne and keratosis pilaris.
The increased skin exfoliation of vitamin A helps unclog pores and can dramatically improve skin texture. Benefits of Retinol
Retinol is a great addition to your acne program. It is considered "comedolitic" meaning it reduces formations of comedones. For acne, it can provide long-lasting results when used in combination with benzoyl peroxide products, or our Brightening Gel and daily acid home care treatment. It is the only ingredient on the market that visibly reduces facial lines and wrinkles and can prevent new lines and wrinkles from forming. Retinol stimulates new collagen production, which will help reduce the skin's aging process.
Side Effects of Retinol
Like other products that are marketed or prescribed for acne treatment, hyperpigmentation or aging skin, the use of retinol can initially produce symptoms such as reddened, warm or tingling skin. It can also cause some people to be more sensitive to sunlight. Other side effects of retinol include dry, flaky, or scaly skin. Retinol is generally not recommended for use during pregnancy and it is not effective with destroying probiotic acne bacteria.
Five Tips to get the most out of your Retinol application:
- Apply retinoids before bedtime as sunlight can destabilize its effectiveness.
- If you are acne prone or have occasional breakouts choose retinolic in a gel or serum base as most creams contain isopropyl myristate (a solvent that is considered a clogging ingredient). We offer Obagi Tretinoin Gel or a Dermavita Retinolic Serum for acne or oily skin types. - Because retinoids slough off dead surface cells removing the skin's natural protection against UV exposure, be sure to apply an SPF protection of at least 30 or higher before heading outside. Stop using it about one week before going on vacation (to the beach) and take with you the highest SPF protection.
- In order to make sure that your skin will not react harshly to a new formula, start by using a retinoid every other day or by mixing it (half and half) with your night cream. If your skin is still dry and irritated apply it every third day for two weeks. Then use a retinoid every other day for the next two weeks and build up slowly to daily use.
- For some people (especially those with fair complexions, dry, or mature skin) the process might take longer. Others may be able to use a retinoid every other day. According to experts, you will have to maintain this routine throughout life in order to keep that youthful skin.
